Are you looking for the best rope to be used for the decorative purpose? This may depend on your preferences. In some cases, you may be after something more traditional looking, while for others, they might prefer a sleeker more synthetic modernist look. Traditionally, natural fibre ropes such as manila, sisal, hemp, jute, and cotton have been favoured for their visual appeal. For long term outdoor use, however, there are great natural looking human-made options such as Synthetic Hemp which is more resilient to rot, mildew, and UV.

Several types of rope are used in decorative and landscape applications, but the most popular and commonly used is the twisted Manila Rope. This natural fibre rope is used to enhance walkways, create borders, and form railings on decks, patios, and decks. It can be wrapped around or through poles to create a rustic or nautical look. Many dimensions of manila rope are used in decorative rope applications.

Manila rope is biodegradable and therefore environmentally friendly. Since it is made of natural fibre, it will fade and weather with time, thus changing from a light brown/tan colour to a light shade of grey. As such, this rope is excellent in decorative rope applications.

When deciding how much rope is required for your decorative rope project, there are essential factors to keep in mind. If it is to be used in an outdoor application, one must factor in the shrinkage that will occur when the rope becomes wet. Manila rope can shrink when it is wet, so it must be draped appropriately. You may get an expert to help in determining how much manila rope will be needed for your decorative rope project depending on how it will be installed.

When placing the manila rope in the holes, drilling holes has to be done, which is approximately one-half inch in diameter larger than the diameter of the rope being used. This not only aids with the ease of installation but will allow for any swelling that can occur when the rope is wet or ages.

Another consideration is the technique to be used in finishing the cut ends of the manila rope, to hinder unravelling and give it a clean, finished appearance. The most common way to do this is to “serve” or “whip” the ends with sisal twine that we can provide with the order.

This illustration shows a simple method of whipping a rope. It is made by laying a loop along the rope and then taking a series of turns over the loop. The working end is finally brought up through this loop and hauled out of sight by pulling the other end. Both ends are then trimmed. The length of the whipping must be approximately equal to the diameter of the rope or, if applicable, should be long enough to cover the splice.

Other types that may be used in decorative rope projects include:

  • Twisted Nylon

  • Cotton

  • Polypropylene Rope

  • Nylon Rope

In summary, there are vast types of decorative ropes to be used in various projects. You need to choose the one that suits you.
