You will notice small cracks often appear on walls and ceilings over time and there are several causes for it. Generally caused by the natural settling of a house over a period of time, you can very well repair a cracked wall. Luckily, hairline cracks are not a critical structural problem and can be repaired relatively easily by using drywall plaster. Let’s dive deep into the steps.
For hairline cracks
Step 1- The first step to repairing a hairline wall crack is to remove all the loose materials from the crevice. Run a putty knife or any other tool through the crack numerous times to loosen any crumbling wall material. Also, try to scrape away any sort of peeling paint along the edges.
Step 2- Clean away all dust from the scraping, and prime the surface. Vacuum the dust and it must be completely clean of any debris as it will make the wall look clean and help in the repairing process.
Step 3- Prepare the patching drywall plaster mix. Add some filler powder with water and stir continuously until it becomes a thick paste. You can ensure its thick enough when you put your scraper into it and it doesn’t flow to the floor of the bucket.
Step 4- The next step is to mix well and apply a very thick coat of crack filler or drywall plaster using back-and-forth strokes to fully cover the crack and surrounding wall surface. Immediately skim off the excess drywall plaster by using a putty knife and holding it at a 30° angle. While applying pressure downwards, draw the blade along the length of the crack.
Step 5- Let the material set and sand very gently by using sandpaper over the applied area. Wipe the repair lightly by using a damp rag to remove the sanding dust.
For Damps in the wall
Step 1- First, dampen the groove. Try using a damp sponge or a spray bottle. The stick of the patching compound will be better if it’s slightly wet and this will stop the drywall plaster from sucking out the moisture from the filler too quickly.
Step 2- Fill the groove with the mix you have prepared. Use your scraper for both the application of the material and scraping any excess. There is no requirement of making the surface absolutely flat.
Step 3- Wait until the drywall plaster dries fully. This will take anywhere from 12 to 24 hours. The manufacturer’s instructions will give you the full instructions
Step 4- The surface should be cleaned in the next process by wrapping your sanding block with medium-grade sandpaper. Next, use fine-grade paper.
Step 5- Prime the repaired area by using your paintbrush. On the repaired crack apply the primer. Is this important? Absolutely yes, because the filler will absorb the paint much quicker than the rest of the wall. Otherwise, you will notice the repaired spot after having it painted.
Step 6- The hairline crack in the drywall plaster wall is now completely repaired and ready for painting. Congratulations!
