Why is bubble wrap such an amazing protective material?

Updated: Apr 5, 2022

Bubble wrap was found in 1957. It happened by chance, almost accidentally. Engineers in New Jersey were working on designing a new type of wallpaper. They tried to connect two pieces of shower curtains. However, the story says that tiny air bubbles got trapped between them.

The product never reached the market as wallpaper, but it found its purpose as an innovative and very useful, highly protective packaging material. One of the first customers was IBM. They bought a lot of bubble wrap material to securely pack their computers. The rest is history – the most beloved wrapping material quickly spread around the world.

Bubble wrap technology

The double-layer bubble wrap consists of air bubbles captured between layers of polyethylene film. Its thermal and acoustic isolator properties are superb. This film protects the product from scratching, breakage and moisture. It can also be recycled.

Areas of application:

  • Wood industry

  • Construction industry (insulation material)

  • Glass processing industry

  • Furniture protection

  • Ceramics protection

  • Appliances protection

  • Any kind of fragile item protection during transport.

Sometimes, multiple layers of bubble wrap are required to provide shock and vibration protection. A single layer can be used only as a surface protective layer. If the wrap type is carefully chosen and correctly applied to the item, it protects it from:

  • Breakage,

  • Scratches,

  • Shock,

  • Moisture

  • Deformation.

Despite the fact that there are many different kinds of wrapping and protective materials in

the market, bubbles are sometimes irreplaceable because of their amazing physical and technical properties. There are many benefits to using bubble wrapping material, including:

  • Lightweight material,

  • Watertight material,

  • Easily cut and shaped around the product,

  • Great toughness and resistance to tearing,

  • Good thermal stability,

  • Ecologically acceptable.

Types of bubble wrap products

  • Bubble wrap in Sydney offer is very rich and versatile. Bubble envelopes are used to protect the mail. Bubble spray is most commonly formed from a polyethylene film with a side-to-side design to form air protection on different kinds of materials. Other types of bubble wrap products include:

  • Heavy-duty bubble wrap: used for extra-sensitive, very valuable or heavy items which are very fragile and must be safely transported with an extra level of security when it comes to holding them in place during the transit.

  • General-purpose bubble wrap: good for light to medium-weight products which are not so fragile and are less likely to break during transport.

  • Adhesive bubble wrap mask: specially designed for large products which must be protected during transport as it can stick on the product, thus ensuring its position without leaving any traces and marks on the product itself.

  • Anti-static wrap: used for electronic devices and appliances.

  • Food–protection bubble wrap: used to protect fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as items which can be squeezed and deformed, such as chocolate. This type of wrap is heat and moisture-resistant.

  • Extreme protection wraps: specially designed for extra fragile, valuable items. Consists of three layers: cushioning + air bubbles + another cushioning layer.
